Zawia University, Libya Zawia University was established in 1983, and started by Faculty of Education as a branch of the Faculty of Education at the University of Tripoli. In 1988, the ministry of HE was made an official decision to become Zawia University a governmental independent institution. Nowadays, ZU is a third largest university in Libya. ZU covers all area and fields of study and researches, also offers bachelor, master degree courses and researches. Three teaching hospitals (Az zawiyah - Surman - Sabratha) are used for the qualified graduates and conducted studies and researches. There is also a Language Centre (English Language Centre coordinated by British Council - French language Centre - Italian language centre). According to 2012/2013 academic year, the number of academic staff is about 2124 and teaching assistant is about 972, while non-academic staff is about 4105. The number of UG-student is about 47322, while PG-student is about 1746.

ZU engaged in four EU projects that is Building Capacity For University Management in the ENPI South Region (BCUM): 530485-TEMPUS-1-2012-1-1-UK-TEMPUS-JPGR: coordinated by Cardiff Met and funded by EU; Modernizing UNIversity GOVernance and Management in Libya – (UNIGOV): 530720-TEMPUS-1-2012-1-ES-TEMPUS-JPGR: Coordinated by Alicante University & financed by EU; Erasmus Mundus Project titled as Erasmus Mundus Al Idrisi II‘ A scholarship scheme for exchange and cooperation between Europe and North Africa: Coordinated by Granada University & financed by EU; Strategic Planning project titled as Parmenides Eidos advanced visual reasoning language: coordinated by European School of Governance- Berlin and funded by ZU; Civil Initiatives Libya (CIL) Project for Az-zawiyah city: Coordinated by the Agency for Technical Cooperation and Development (ACTED) & also financed by EU.

Zawia city is a best safe city nowadays in western region of Libya. It covered the area from the sea to the mountains of Jabal Nafousa and west of Tripoli about 40 km and boarding to Tunisia. The population is around 693,000. It has a mixed culture: Arab, Tamazight, urban, Rural, Mosques, Church, Tradition, and Modern.
