Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi is the oldest higher education institution in Romania. Ever since 1860, the university has been carrying on a tradition of excellence and innovation in the fields of education and research. With over 38.000 students and 800 academic staff, the university enjoys high prestige at national and international level and cooperates with more than 250 universities world-wide. Once the Bologna Process was implemented, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi became the first student-centered university in Romania.
Research in our university is top level. For the third year in a row, Alexandru Ioan Cuza University was placed first in the national research ranking compiled on the basis of Shanghai criteria. Ongoing research projects: bilateral cooperation (7 projects with partners from France, Greece, Hungary, Italy); 9 projects under Frame Programme 6; 2 projects in COST Network, as well as other types of international projects (such as ESPON, COCOP, AUF, NATO etc.). Striving for excellence, the university takes unique initiatives to stimulate research quality, to encourage dynamic and creative education and to involve its best students in academic life. With its 16 faculties (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics and Business Administration, European Studies, Geography and Geology, History, Law, Letters, Mathematics, Orthodox Theology, Philosophy and Social-Political Sciences, Physical Education and Sports, Physics, Psychology and Education Sciences, Roman-Catholic Theology), Alexandru Ioan Cuza University offers BA, Ma and PhD programmes, many of them taught in foreign languages.
In terms of resources, the university has its own publishing house, a Botanical Garden, research resorts, archeological sites and museums, an astronomic observatory and a planetarium, 12 hostels and two modern dormitories (Gaudeamus and Akademos)- all within walking distance from the main university building. It has a kindergarten and a primary school as well.
